Today marks a dark anniversary for the Southern Downs

FORTY-NINE years ago today, a tornado ripped through the town of Killarney destroying over 200 homes and ripping through businesses.

One little girl also sadly lost her life in the monster storm.

The town was left devastated, but managed to pull together to clean-up and help out after the destruction had finished.

A few key buildings on the main street were spared destruction, including the Killarney Hotel.

But many businesses were ruined with the tops blown clean-off some, explaining why many shops in Killarney are single storey.

Killarney and District Historical Society secretary Jeanette Braithwaite said the storm demonstrated the resilience of the people in Killarney, as many stayed in the town despite their homes and businesses being ruined.

"People pulled together, checking on neighbours," she said.

"It was the spirit of Queensland pulling together."

An official ceremony will not be held today to commemorate the tragedy, but the Historical Society have big plans for the 50th anniversary next year.

A dinner will be held and the 40th anniversary memorial book will be reissued, with new content and stories.

The Historial Society also hopes to install a memorial to the tragedy in the town in time for the half-century anniversary.

The Historical Society are calling on people to contribute their own memories of the tornado.

Anyone who would like to contribute is encouraged to contact the Killarney and District Historical Society via the Killarney Heritage Centre Facebook page or phone 46641233.
