Time trucking is properly recognised
THIS is the best way to train new truck drivers - an apprenticeship.
Driver Ken Worth said proper driving schools where people could go and do a "proper course” filled with not just driving but all the practical skills that went along with it.
"It would probably help that skills that used to be learned working your way up could be taught properly and there would be recognition of those skills,” he said.
Danny Boronski agreed, saying it should be a qualified trade, certified and all.
"We are the most heavily regulated industry yet no qualifications needed to become a driver,” he said.
"We have major responsibility out here on the road every day yet unskilled people get behind the wheel.
"We have so much to remember to do and follow protocols of our employer and/or clients' demands yet still nothing is required to be a trucker.
"And this is why people die every day in and around the industry. We need education, skill training and certified systems just like any other trade available.
"Why is a truck driver, which is a trade, the only profession that isn't trade recognised?”
