Thunderstorm warnings cancelled

THE Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled two severe thunderstorm warnings for flash flooding.

The immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has passed, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary.

Rainfall of 180mm since midnight was recorded at Oyster Creek on the Gold Coast, including 91mm in hour.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

  • Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
  • Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
  • For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

There is a severe weather warning current for for damaging winds and heavy rain for people in the Gulf Country, North West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, eastern  parts of the Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego and  western parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.

At 10am AEST Friday, a deep monsoon low was located over land near the northwest Queensland / Northern Territory border and was moving towards the southeast. The low is expected to move south through the Central West and into the southern interior on Saturday.

Heavy rain is likely to lead to flash flooding and significant creek and river rises throughout the warning area, though mainly in the northwest of the state during today and Saturday morning, contracting into the central interior and southern interior during Saturday. 24 hour totals in excess of 150mm are likely in rain areas. More intense local falls are likely with thunderstorms.

Locations which may be affected include Burketown, Mount Isa, Longreach, Blackall, Charleville, Roma and  Windorah.

Currently the heaviest rain is falling in the far northwest of the state, and 24 hour totals up to 9am Friday of 221mm were recorded at Augustus Downs, 143mm at Floraville and 110mm at Burketown.

Locally damaging wind gusts to 100 km/h are possible, particularly near thunderstorms over the Gulf Country and Northwest districts during the rest of today and into Saturday morning, and then over the Central West and  Maranoa and Warrego districts during Saturday.

The following Watches/Warnings are current:

Police are advising the community to avoid flooded roads, creeks and watercourses and members of the public are also reminded that road closures and road conditions can change rapidly as creeks and water courses can rise and fall quickly.

Police would like to remind motorists and members of the public of the hazardous and unpredictable nature of flood waters and the dangers associated with storm debris and road washouts. Police urge everyone to obey road closure signs and to travel with extreme caution, limiting non essential travel in flood affected areas where possible.

Parents are also reminded to ensure their children are not playing in flood prone waterways, watercourses and drains as water levels can rise quickly. Members of the public should monitor local radio stations, their local council and organisations, such as the Traffic and Travel information site or call 13 19 40 for information on localised flooding and road closures.
