Throw smashes 18-year-old record

A RECORD that has stood for 18 years was smashed at the recent North Burnett Track and Field Carnival in Childers by Gayndah rising star Sienna Slattery.

In the U11 girls discus, Slattery launched a throw of 24.52m, blitzing the previous record of 23.81m.

"It was an outstanding effort and a credit to her. She has been training very hard mastering the spin technique,” her father Paul said.

Slattery said discus was her favourite event because of the strength and technical requirements of throwing long distances.

She also competed in the U11 shot put at the carnival, where she placed first with a throw of 9.05m.

Slattery trains with the help of a special cement pad in her backyard that her parents built.

She's currently preparing for the Wide Bay 10-12 Years Track and Field Trials in Bundaberg next Tuesday, where she hopes to continue her winning streak.

The all-rounder also mixes it with the boys for the U12 Central Burnett Brumbies rugby league team, where she has done well enough to earn selection for the South Burnett U12 girls representative team.

When not on the field, you can also find Slattery horse riding, fishing and painting.
