This is the eagle that Jack landed

WHEN you cast your line fishing you never expect to hook a sea eagle.

But for 15-year-old Jack England of Caloundra, that is exactly what happened.

His mother Lisa watched on in horror as the snagged bird flew 100 metres away from the jetty and tangled itself around a buoy.

Thankfully the line around the buoy snapped and the bird flapped its way through the water, toward the jetty in between Bulcock and Golden Beach.

"It looked right at us with intense, dark eyes. It came straight for us - it came to us for help," she said.

"My son was quite freaked out about the experience."

Wearily Lisa's partner Dan picked up the eagle and with the help of a stranger untangled the bird and removed the hook, which was lodged in the bird's leg.

It took around 15 minutes to unwrap and cut all the line from around its legs and wings, but the bird stayed relatively calm, only trying to peck his rescuers a few times.

Lisa said the eagle stood around for about five minutes on the jetty near its rescuers, possibly to get over the shock of the experience.

"It was surreal and such a relief it was okay," she said.

"The eagle stretched out its wings and dried them off - before flying away. It later flew back near the jetty and caught and ate a fish."
