The Western Star is right for Jack

CALLING Legana in the Apple Isle home, but currently based in northeastern Victoria at Benalla is Western Star log truck driver Jack McCullagh, who had his rig on show at Wangaratta.

Jack operates the 2017-model for DBC Cartage, with the Western Star sporting a Cummins E5 rated at 600 horsepower under the bonnet, with a Kennedy Trailers log trailer neatly folded up on the back of the prime mover.

Jack hauls softwood timber from a number of pine plantations around Tallangatta, Guys Forest, Bonnie Doon and Tatong, hauling to mills in Benalla, Wangaratta and Broadford along with the occasional trip to the export port at Geelong.

The 24-year-old reckons the Western Star is the right truck for the job.

"It does it easily through the hills, it's a good truck to drive and it handles the roads well,” he said.

Starting out doing quarry work in a Kenworth T401 three years ago, Jack has been based on the mainland for the last 12 months and heads back home every eight weeks or so for a bit of shooting and fishing.

"Tassie is pretty good for that!”
