The vintage motorcycle with many romantic memories
VINTAGE bikes that have featured in the region's long and unique history of motorcycling rolled into Artspace Mackay yesterday in preparation for the On Yer Bike exhibition.
Motorcycle enthusiasts Peter Douglas and his wife Helen are the proud owners of a Yamaha YR-1 and believe it is an exciting opportunity to see the machine included in such a historical collection.
"I originally purchased this bike in November 1967, when I was 18, and I found myself having to move to Hughenden for work so I was travelling back every fortnight on the weekends to see Helen,” Mr Douglas said.
When the couple eventually married they decided to use the bike as their means of transport on their honeymoon.
"We were finally married in 1971 and we travelled to Melbourne on the bike for our honeymoon which is an experience I'll always remember,” Mrs Douglas said.
As well as showcasing unique motorcycles, the exhibition includes a fascinating collection of the stories behind the bikes and their owners.
"It's been exciting to have this bike featured in an exceptional collection, each bike has a fascinating story behind it,” Mr Douglas said.
The exhibition opens tonight with a floor talk by curator Julie Skate at 5pm before the official opening at 6pm.
It will remain open at Artspace Mackay until November 25.
