YOUR LETTERS: Indonesian way is very different to Australia
MOST of us realise Indonesia is not Australia. It is a very different culture with a quite cruel background moulded by both the Japanese occupation and subsequent brutal pogroms by leaders.
Accordingly, their justice and prison systems do not mirror what we are accustomed to.
Much of the circus that surrounded the life and death of the Bali Two was not necessarily of Indonesia's making.
I doubt there would have been such showmanship had there not been the hordes of media waiting to photograph every opportunity.
To us, the murder of two fully alive human beings appears unfathomable given they had rehabilitated - a fact that apparently counts for nothing in the Indonesian system.
As neither Chan nor Sukumaran have given up the kingpins of their drug's operation, and given the AFP have had over nine years to investigate, it is worth asking is there any progress at all?
The dignity afforded the victims of similar executions of Australians in Singapore and Malaysia may not have been coloured by length of time nor notoriety.
Perhaps that is the difference.
