The Flash S2E20: Rupture review
*spoilers ahead if you haven't watched The Flash season two, episode 20*
"I need my powers back."
With those fateful words, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin)'s fate was sealed.
He sacrificed his powers in exchange for the safety of his team at the end of last week's episode, handing his improved power over to Zoom to leave his arch nemesis more powerful than ever.
The move, which was ridiculous given Barry was finally faster than Zoom, meant he spent most of this week powerless to stop the second season's big bad's attacks.
Zoom ran roughshod, and it took his murder of CCPD's finest to spur Barry into action.
He had two options: live as a regular person, or recreate (with Harrison Wells' help) the particle accelerator explosion to give him back his powers.
The plan is very similar to that as seen in the Flashpoint Paradox comic, though this wasn't nearly as successful.
The experiment worked, but Barry disintegrated before our eyes.
Being The Flash, it is likely he will return, but how, when and why will remain a mystery.
An extra layer appears in that Wally West and Jesse Quick were both affected by the blast, meaning both could be on their way to becoming their comic book alter egos.
Similar to Barry's fate, that is left unaddressed, as we're left with the pair motionless on the ground.
A few more things:
- Garrick is Barry Allen's dad's mum's maiden name? That sounds a bit ridiculous spelt out, but I think I'm slightly more excited by where they could take this storyline.
- Zoom swinging by Central City Police Department, with Caitlin Snow, telling the cops to everyone the city belongs to him? Okay. That was it too quick of a return, but the way he worked with Rupture - and his subsequent "dismissal" - made him an even better villain.
- Cisco's brother Dante isn't having the most joyous time on The Flash. Last time he appeared he was attacked by the Rogues (Captain Cold and Heatwave), and this time it was Rupture's turn. Rupture, from Earth-2, was Reverb's brother (Cisco's evil Earth-2 doppelgänger), and attacked the Ramons to avenge Reverb's death. The episode's events seemingly brought the pair closer together, though whether that means Dante will return remains a mystery.
