Teen urinates on public BBQ

A MAN who urinated on a hot barbecue at Riverheart Parklands told police he was entitled to do it because it was "his land".

A Safe City camera operator saw Brodie Enoch Dale Franc Purcell urinating on the facilities, regularly used by Ipswich families, at 2.30am on September 1 and notified police.

The footage showed Purcell spitting on a public barbecue and watching the spittle burn, before jumping on top of it and urinating over the hot plate.

The 19-year-old then fell off the barbecue and continued to urinate over the chairs, tables and facilities surround it.

When police located Purcell shortly after, he told them it was "his land" and he could urinate "where he wants".

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Jo Colston said many Ipswich families regularly use the facilities and the mess cost Ipswich City Council $300 to clean up.

Defence lawyer Vincent Knox said his client was very ashamed and embarrassed about his actions.

"He admits he was drunk and stupid and certainly doesn't normally drink to a point where he'd do that," Mr Knox said.

Magistrate Michael Quinn told Purcell he "should be ashamed".

"Being under the influence of liquor is no justification for your foul and disgusting behaviour," Mr Quinn said.

"You interfered with people enjoying the area and affected a service paid for by the council and its citizens."

Purcell was put on a $500, six-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $300 restitution to Ipswich City Council.

No conviction was recorded.
