Teen shoots for the stars
WHILE most 14-year-olds are hanging out with friends or going to the beach on the weekends, Hervey Bay's An Butler is at work behind a camera, paving the way for a career in videography.
Between homework and school, the inspirational year 10 student started a small business last year and has already been booked to create several promotional videos around the region, including the Urangan Pier Park Markets.
The best experience by far, An said, was having the opportunity to film her ultimate idols and pop sensations, Justice Crew, when they come to town in February.
"I got to meet the Justice Crew and it was really fun," An said.
"I'm a really big fan of them and I was a bit shaky at the start but it was a really good opportunity.
"I heard about them coming and I was lucky to be able to come along and do the video.
"It's been one of my biggest achievements. I was really proud of myself."
An's passion for videoing started at a young age after drawing inspiration for her mum and well-known local photographer Joy Butler.
"Mum is a photographer and I like to do the videos so it's two completely different things, but at the same time it really helps me because being a photographer you need good lighting and think about the different shots you can take ... so I use that in my videos," she said.
"Mum really helps and us together make a really good team.
"She really inspires me and pushes me to get out there and really do my best."
An said creating her small business was a necessary stepping stone to securing a career as a professional videographer.
"I am building a pathway to what I want to do when I finish.
"I've been looking at schools I want to go to on the Sunshine Coast where they teach filming and directing."
Looking forward to covering a wedding later this year, An said she fell in love with the profession because of the long lasting memories a video can make.
"I love capturing smiles and seeing people have a good time.
"It's so good to video all these great things happening and put it all together so it's something they can look back on as a keepsake.
"I just love it."
