POLICE are appalled to see a young teenager allegedly behind the brutal bashing of a taxi driver last month in Rockhampton.

Detective Acting Inspector Scott Moon said he was surprised to see someone so young be so brazen to commit an armed robbery.

The 16-year-old faced Rockhampton Children's Court yesterday morning charged with armed robbery after the attack on August 26.

The taxi driver had been parked at Rigarlsford Park in Koongal when the teen allegedly came up from behind the car.

It was reported the driver was reading on his tablet when the teen hit him in the face through the open driver's side window.

Det Snr Sgt Moon said they believe the object the youth used was a rock; however, tests were still being done.

The teen stole $200 cash during the attack then fled the scene.

"These sorts of brazen attacks on people going about their business is disgusting, doesn't matter what age a person is, the community expects better of people," Det Act Insp Moon said.

"The taxi driver has been released from hospital and is still recovering.

The teen is also facing 37 counts of fraud in relation to another matter. He will reappear in court to face the armed robbery charge at a later date.
