Tech startups have a new team for a new year

MACKAY is no Silicon Valley, but for technology and business lovers, there's still hope.

Startup Mackay is a group of individuals who aim to promote and grow entrepreneurship in the region.

After a successful 'Startup Weekend Mackay' earlier this month, an event which had participants pitch and build on concepts over several days, the organisation voted in its new management committee at their AGM on Friday.

Current secretary Joel Cox was elected president for 2017, while Chris Vella was chosen as secretary and Graham Caracciolo as treasurer.

A new initiative for next year was the addition of two members to the management committee, bringing the total amount of members to five.

Current president Dennis Murphy was elected to the management committee, alongside Rob Kidd.

Mr Cox said the group already had plans for events in the new year.

"In the first half of 2017 we'll be hosting a Startup Youth Weekend,” he said.

"It's similar in concept to our regular weekend, but is for the 12-16 age group.

"We'll still host our flagship Startup Weekend Mackay event in the second half of the year, as well as our regular monthly meet-ups.”
