Tassie Truckin': Tom Triffett

TOM Triffett from Granton told us the other day: "I have been driving for Hazell's for a couple of good years now, top outfit and they look after their gear, as well as their crew.”

He had pulled in to Mood Food, the Bennetts' Caltex 24-hour truck stop at Kempton, driving an immaculate 2007 Freightliner tri-axle concrete tanker, and he was on his way north to Railton for a load back to Hobart.

We had known Tom as an owner/driver, as he was for the first 35 years of his 40 years on the road, and he told us that while he has always enjoyed driving for a living, there were just too many hassles in being an owner/driver now days, and he was finding it a good deal better having job security and good bosses to handle the bureaucracy.

He added he enjoyed being out in the bush doing a bit of shooting in his time off.
