THE Indonesian Government could increase its live cattle import quota from northern Australia by up to 25,000 head after talks with Queensland's agriculture minister.

John McVeigh and his Northern Territory counterpart Willem Westra van Holthe have inspected Indonesian feedlots while speaking with the northern neighbour's ministers for agriculture and trade.

While no official announcement has been made, Mr McVeigh said the current import quota was 270,000 head and early calculations could mean an extra 20,000 to 25,000 more cattle out of northern Australia in the short term.

"(The Indonesian agriculture minister) talked about the need to increase beef consumption in his country and also the option of a possible increase in live cattle imports by bringing forward the next third-quarter quota by one month," he said.

"There are great opportunities for involvement in skills training, value-adding along the production chain and education exchanges for young people in the beef industry."
