Talented truckie's artworks
DAVID Martin loves everything when it comes to trucks.
He loves driving them ("I wouldn't do anything else, it's something I wanted to do as soon as I could”), and he loves to create works of art inspired by trucks too.
By day he's a woodworker and by night he's a truck driver.
David, who lives at home in Brisbane's southeast with his wife and four kids, has worked in the industry for 25 years, mostly doing interstate driving.
But since he picked up a local job in Brisbane after moving up north from Canberra, he's been able to sink his teeth into his other love - woodworking.
He works a permanent night shift, so loves that he gets some time to himself during the day to work on his projects.
He first got into woodwork when his wife suggested he make a bedhead.
"I thought I could do that, so I bought a bit of wood and made one and really enjoyed it,” he said.
"It started there, and I started doing signs for family and friends and it's grown from there.
"It's a hobby, gives me something to do during the day before I go to work.”
Soon, though, David decided what he really wanted to create was an image of a truck.
"Because I'm in the industry I was looking for different things to do with trucks so I found a nice picture and put it into wood,” he said.
"I saw a picture and I liked it and thought I'd do it myself and now it's hanging on my garage wall at home.”
He said while there were other creators out there who used machines to create similar products, it was the handmade touch that made his creations special.
"There are others out there that do it with machines but you just lose the handmade touch,” he said.
David said he enjoyed the whole process - from designing, to creating and then enjoying the final product.
