Sykes up for shot at Japan victory
RUGBY SEVENS: Despite only just wrapping up her silver medal debut at the Commonwealth Games, Emma Sykes is already on a plane bound for the next international challenge.
Sykes and her Australian team-mates claimed silver at the Gold Coast on Sunday following an extra-time thriller against New Zealand.
Just two days later and Sykes was already boarding a plane at Sydney airport bound for Kitakyushu, Japan, to compete in a HSBC Sevens World Series event.
The 19-year-old flew out on Tuesday night and was hopeful of another solid outing on the international stage.
"It's going to be hard to back up but then again teams will say we've had game time whereas they haven't,” Sykes said.
"I think coming off that silver we're going to be really fired up and really wanting to go out there and take out Kitakyushu.”
With wins in Dubai and Sydney, Australia currently lead the series standings.
They'll take on Spain, Ireland and China in their group pool, but a rematch against New Zealand could be on the cards in the later stages of the Japanese event.
Sykes was unsure as to how she'd back up from the Games, but believed she'd grown as a player from her time on the Gold Coast and was "heading in the right direction”.
"We don't normally get to play with crowds that big going to places around the world where rugby isn't such a big thing for females. So to be able to play in front of that many people and all that, it definitely has made me a better player and I know that it has made a lot of people better players,” she said.
She started in each of the five games and even had a chance to seal the gold in the final, but her kick was unsuccessful.
"I thought I played solid,” she said.
"I still have a very long way to go and I was pleased that I was able to go out there and get the game time that I did.
"I've got to be better and get those ones when the pressure is there. I'll learn from that and I've taken a lot out of it.
