Swedish brand takes honours in another flat sales month
THE new truck sales industry had another difficult month in September with VFACTS and Truck Industry Council (TIC) data showing yet another drop in demand.
Coming off a couple of record years, truck sales in 2019 have had the brakes on almost since day one and September was no better.
In total, 3,170 Heavy Commercial Vehicles, including vans and cab chassis over 3.5 tonnes, were handed over to customers in September, a total down 9.7 per cent on the same month last year.
All three categories, Light-Duty, Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty all receded in September with the big boys taking the biggest hit with a dip in sales of 11 per cent.
Just 1,064 new Heavy-Duty trucks found Aussie owners in the month with some of the biggest brands being left with fairly dismal results.
Suffering the most in the category in September was the traditionally popular Kenworth and Mack Trucks brands. The trucking stalwarts delivered 33.2 per cent and 22.1 per cent fewer trucks than in the same month last year and were well behind the segment average.
MAN also lost ground in the segment. The German brand handed over 29 Heavy-Duty trucks, a near 24 per cent reduction on the brand's September 2018 total of 38 vehicles.
UD Trucks (-25 per cent), Freightliner (-42.4 per cent) and Isuzu (-13.3 per cent) also finished well behind their total from the same month last year.
But despite the gloom there was some wins, particularly for the Swedish truck brands.
Volvo Trucks won the segment sales race with 198 total sales (+5.3 per cent) and Scania improved 43.2 per cent with a strong 116 sales.
Iveco (+33.3 per cent), DAF (+7.0 per cent), Hino (+5.7 per cent) and Mercedes-Benz (+11.3 per cent) all ended up in the black.
International Trucks sold two Heavy-Duty trucks in September to Aussie customers, Dennis Eagle and Hyundai managed the single customer transaction.
Medium-Duty truck sales feel back 5.0 per cent in the month with a total of 622 trucks sold, again, most came from the Japanese manufacturers.
Isuzu claimed the top honours in the category with 238 sales, Hino snagged 183 and Fuso 99. The big mover though was MAN with the brand enjoying a 155.6 per cent lift in sales in the segment with 69 Medium-Duty MANs being handed over to customers.
While the Japanese domination also continued in the Light-Duty segment with Isuzu again coming out on top, that's despite a better than 20 per cent drop in demand for the all-conquering N-Series.
Despite the slow down the model still swallowed up better than 21 per cent of the more than 1,400 total sales in the keenly-fought segment.
Across all segments it was Isuzu that again sold more heavy commercial vehicles than any other Aussie importer/manufacturer.
Isuzu's 707 sales eclipsed Hino's 458 total with both single-brand Japanese outfits topping multi-brand concerns - Daimler (350), Volvo Group (325), Paccar (224), Iveco/International (199) and Penske (116).
