Survivor Dan ditches razor in cancer fight
DAN Peart knows first-hand the impact a cancer diagnosis can have on an individual and a family.
In November last year, he was diagnosed with stage four bowel and liver cancer at age 41, and had to relocate his family to Brisbane for his treatment.
It was during chemotherapy, following liver surgery, that the weather turned cold and Mr Peart was told his platelets were low. His subsequent decision to stop shaving because it posed too much of a risk lead to his discovery of Cancer Council Queensland's Beard150 campaign.
The annual campaign calls on 150 Queensland men to grow a beard over winter, to encourage men to talk about their health and raise funds for those affected by cancer.
Within 24 hours of registering for Beard150, Mr Peart surpassed his goal of raising $700. And when the Chinchilla News spoke to him this week, he had raised $4700.
Mr Peart finished a three month round of chemotherapy last week and when the Chinchilla News spoke to him this week, he had some more good news; the Pearts would finally be able to come home to Chinchilla at the end of the year.
"Cancer Council Queensland is doing a great job helping families like ours and supporting people going through a very difficult part of their lives,” he said.
