How tourism is pumping millions into our economy
BUNDABERG is reaping the rewards from a growing number of international visitors, with overseas tourists injecting $39 million into the economy in the year to June 2016.
According the the survey produced by Tourism Research Australia, for the 2015-16 financial year, 39,000 international tourists visited Bundaberg, an increase of 6% on the previous year.
Member for Hinkler and Assistant Minister for Tourism Keith Pitt said the International Visitor Survey showed more international tourists were visiting the region, staying longer and spending more.
"This is great news for Hinkler and the 3015 local tourism jobs," he said.
International visitors spent $39 million while in Bundaberg, an increase of 12%.
Visitor nights also recorded growth, with international tourists staying 1,178,000 nights in Bundaberg, an increase of 25%.
"The survey shows the Bundaberg tourism industry continues to register strong growth - driving local jobs and economic growth," Mr Pitt said.
Bundaberg North Burnett Tourism general manager Katherine Mergard said the Southern Great Barrier Reef was a huge drawcard for international visitors.
"BNBT has a strong, collaborative partnership with Tourism & Events Queensland and the Gladstone and Capricorn regions to market the destination in the international markets as the Southern Great Barrier Reef, with the region represented just last week in Cairns at the 'Amazing Aussie Adventure' US trade event," she said.
"With the introduction of the Lady Musgrave Experience operation out of Bundaberg last year, as well as the continued excellence of Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, Bundaberg is reinforcing itself as the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef."
Bundaberg Regional Council tourism spokesman Greg Barnes said the council also welcomed figures released by Tourism Research Australia .
"The figures reflect visitor numbers to the end of March this year with 41,021 visitors recorded compared with 32,409 for the same period last year," he said.
"These latest figures are further confirmation that our region is a destination of choice and suggest consistent growth within the international market."
