Surfing trio set for Peru
THREE local junior surfers have been selected to represent Australia at next week’s World Junior Championships in Peru.
And as the groms would say, they are “frothing” about pulling on the green and gold for the first time.
Brodie Doyle, of Rainbow Bay, Codie Klein, of Kingscliff, and Mitch Parkinson, of Coolangatta, best of mates, join a strong team of 12 surfers.
Australia has had a formidable record in the World Junior Championships, dominating the world teams title for the past five years.
Doyle and Klein will go for gold in the under-18 girls. Last weekend, Doyle won the Queensland State School Surfing Championships and won the MR Shield with twin sister Amiya.
Klein’s preparation took a bit of a beating when she received nine stitches above her ear from a wipe-out on her recent Indonesian holiday.
“I copped my board to the head but my noggin’ is OK and I’m ready for some more excitement in Peru,” she said.
Klein, the Kingscliff High School captain, is New South Wales under-18 champion.
Parkinson, 15, the youngest member of the team, will contest the under-16 boys’ category.
He is on a roll since winning the Easter Rip Curl International Grom Search final at Bells Beach.
“This is a huge opportunity for me and I’ll take whatever I can from this experience,” he said.
Parkinson, a cousin of Joel Parkinson, is the latest surfing champion from the Snapper Rocks Boardriders. The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships will be held from May 21-29.
The Daily News and the Mail newspapers will be sponsoring a homecoming for the young surf stars, called “Frothin’ with the Groms”, at Gold Coast Surf World, Currumbin, on Friday, June 3.
