Surat ready for festival

Markets, street performers and a sculpting workshop will be just a few highlights at the Spirit of the River festival which start tonight.

It is the first time the festival has been held and the celebration has been two years in the making.

Secretary of the festival's committee Joanna Weinert said their catch cry was 'by the community, for the community.'

"That's what we're trying to do is bring the community together to celebrate what is good about Surat," she said.

She said the festival would hopefully give people a boost after all the negativity caused by the floods.

Spirit of the River kicks off tonight when the Surat on Balonne Gallery launches the In Focus photography exhibition.

Then tomorrow, Surat State School will be transformed into a showground with market stalls, games and rides.

The young and the young at heart can have their face painted, have a go on the jumping castles, try out their luck at a game of laughing clowns and play a game of laser skirmish.

Live music will be played throughout the afternoon by local duo Ausphonic and in the evening there will be a round of open air bingo with a $500 payout.

"We also have a top Brisbane band coming up called Made in Australia," Ms Weinert said.

"They're the nation's number one tribute band to classic Australian rock and the ultimate rock experience."

The next day the Surat Fishing and Restocking Club will be holding a Clean Up Australia Day event in the town's memorial park complete with a barbecue breakfast.

Ben Somerville Sculpting will also be holding a workshop at the Hub on Burrowes Street.

Joanna Weinert said she wanted to thank everyone who had supported the Spirit of the River committee.

"It's their positive comments and support that gives us the energy to keep going," she said.
