Support is focus of Catholic school communities

PROVIDING a learning environment that is spiritually nurturing, intellectually challenging and emotionally caring, Catholic school communities continue to provide support to lifelong learners so that they will be able and willing to envision and contribute to the creation of a just, equitable and compassionate world.

Here in the Diocese of Rockhampton (Bundaberg to Mackay and west to Longreach) our Catholic schools strive, not just to be different, but to make a difference in the lives of the young people entrusted to our care.

Today around 1500 students in Gladstone and Tannum Sands attend three Catholic Primary schools and one Catholic Secondary college staffed by 300 teachers and support personnel, as part of the Southern Region of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Rockhampton.

Our 31 primary schools and eight colleges are founded on a strong Catholic ethos enabling the spirit of Jesus Christ to permeate all aspects of life in our educational communities.

Catholic education:

  • Values diversity and treats each student with dignity enabling them in turn to promote and respect the dignity of all;
  • Nurtures in students a commitment to social justice and a critical social consciousness;
  • Prepares students for global responsibilities through stewardship of the earth's resources;
  • Is an integral part of the local and universal Church;
  • Occurs in welcoming, inclusive and connected communities.

Catholic schools are vibrant places of learning, they are well-resourced and staff are highly qualified to cater for diverse student needs. In addition, Catholic schools also offer families the experience of a Catholic community and offer students an education focused on the formation of the whole person.

Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

Schools are very much at the heart of communities, and students in our Catholic schools frequently participate in a wide range of pastoral care, social justice and community outreach initiatives, helping to build a social conscience and community awareness within a safe, supportive learning environment.

Catholic Education endeavours to ensure that students are well-equipped to shape their future whatever their chosen endeavour, to be effective contributors to the community, and to have a sense of hope and peace that comes from faith in a loving God.
