Sunshine Coastrek steps out for fun

THOUSANDS of trekkers will hike our stunning coastline in July to raise more than $1.4 million to continue the fight to end avoidable blindness.

Coastrek is one of the country's most popular adventure challenges because it's not a race.

It is a team trekking challenge where participants hike either 30km or 60km for fun, fitness and to support charity.

Since it began in Sydney in 2010, Coastrek has inspired more than 23,000 trekkers, mostly women, and raised nearly $20million for The Fred Hollows Foundation.

The Sunshine Coastrek hikers will travel from Maroochydore or Caloundra to Noosa on Friday, July 27.

The 30km and 60km events are for teams of four (at least two women to each team).

Di Westaway, whose official title is chief adventure chick at Wild Women On Top, organises the treks in Sydney, Melbourne and Sunshine Coast, which see thousands of women each year challenge themselves with an outdoor adventure.

"Hiking helps our heart, buffs our butts, tones wobbly bits, increases suppleness, builds balance, reduces brooding and maximises memory. And it's bloody great fun," she said.

"Last year's inaugural Sunshine Coastrek saw over 1500 trekkers take to the shoreline and challenge themselves, all while raising close to $1million for the Fred Hollows Foundation.

"We'd love to get even more to join us on the crazy fun adventure in July 2018."
