Sullivan sneaks into final

AUSTRALIAN Eamon Sullivan has squeaked into the final of the men's 50 metre freestyle final after recording the equal seventh fastest time.

However, the news was not as good for compatriot James Magnussen, with the newly crowned 100 metre silver medalist knocked out in the semi-finals.

Sullivan and Magnussen, swimming in the same semi-final, finished behind the pair of Brazilian Cesar Cielo and United States' Cullen Jones.

But Sullivan, who just scrapped into the semi-finals, did enough with a time of 21.88 to have a crack at medal swim.

"I was a bit rusty this morning and tried to work on that tonight," Sullivan said.

"I learn from the previous swim ... (so) I wanted to have another swim tomorrow night."

After his previous exertions at these Olympics, Magnussen said he was happy just to swim without pressure.

"It wasn't my best swim ... I just enjoyed the crowd," Magnussen said.

"I had fun tonight and will look back with fond memories."

Meanwhile, Mitch Larkin has finished last in the men's 200 metre backstroke with a time of 1:58.02.

Larkin was no match for the power of United States' Tyler Clary, who edged out Japan's Ryosuke Irie and compatriot Ryan Lochte.
