Struggle to win a tight game for A Grade Seagulls

SEAGULLS experienced the highs and lows of knockout semi final football on Saturday, winning the under 20s and reserve grade, but losing the A grade.

Starting with only 10 fresh players in A grade, the Gulls were in the game up until the last five minutes. Leading 10 - 6 at half time courtesy of two Jacob Watson tries, they then went try for try with Biloela in the second half to be down 22- 24 with only minutes to go.

Then a clean break by Jamie Minto saw him run to the fullback with Dean Blackman in support only to see his pass intercepted and the Panthers scored in that set to put themselves out of range and scored again right on the hooter to win 34 - 22.

Losing their dynamic second rower Sam Lollo to a shoulder injury in the first half took a lot of impact out of the Gulls attack and, with seven players backing up after having played a full game, it was always going to be a struggle to win a tight game. The other tries were scored by Wade Fickling and Sam Holtzheimer.

The reserve grade continued to find ways to win after a scratchy first half that saw them and Biloela go to the sheds locked at 6 - 6.

A great line break by Ken Haxell early in the second half saw him put Luke Sullivan over next to the posts and the Gulls were on their way.

More entertaining football was to follow with a sensational individual try to Jakob Watson from 40m out while the Gulls had a man in the sin bin.

Then with five minutes to go the ball went through six sets of hands to see centre Matt Solis crash over to seal the game.

Coach Allan Frost complimented his side on the win but stated that they will have to start a lot better against Norths in the preliminary final next week.

The under 20s always looked in control in their 22 - 10 win against Tannum.

They will have a replay of last weeks game against Valleys this week.
