Stronger, faster Roos women ready to kick-off

AUSSIE RULES: The Maroochydore Roos women will aim to come out "guns blazing” in a bid to get the season off on the right foot, says coach Stuart Jackson.

The Roos will clash with the University of Queensland at Fishermans Rd at Maroochydore on Saturday and Jackson is confident of a solid outing.

"We've had a fantastic pre-season and the girls have been going at it since mid-November now and they're very, very keen to finally get into the real action,” he said.

The Roos endured a lacklustre season in the Queensland women's league last year and finished sixth of seven teams with only three wins to their name.

However, Jackson said his charges had learned from the experience and were a stronger, more mature outfit.

"We came off an excellent year the year before, winning the second division grand final, and we just weren't quite ready for the big show last year,” he said.

"But this year we are bigger, we're stronger, we're faster and we're fitter so we're looking forward to a good year.

"We'll be a bit more physical and we will be a bit better in the understanding of the game too, I think.”

He said the side had welcomed a number of new recruits from interstate during pre-season which were set to be a force.

One of which, Georgia Doherty, is a former basketball talent who has made "an exceptional transition” to Australian rules football.

Unfortunately, Jackson said the Roos would be without Brisbane Lions AFLW star Shannon Campbell who has joined Wilston Grange this year.

Young talent Jemma Abbott has also left the Roos to join Wilston Grange.

Despite the losses, Jackson said the Roos would still field a solid outfit and looked to start the year with a bang today against UQ.

"We need to come out all guns blazing,” he said.

"UQ are a quality outfit and they finished in top four last year so we'll be looking to make an impression early on in the season before all the Lions players come back.”
