Stosur falls at first hurdle

AUSTRALIAN tennis player Sam Stosur has stumbled to a 6-3, 5-7, 8-10 loss to Carla Suarez Navarro in the first round of the women's singles at the London Olympics.

Stosur, who beat Navarro recently at Wimbledon, could not hold out the Spaniard despite claiming the first set in 30 minutes.

However, Navarro fought back against the reigning US Open champion, taking the second set in 51 minutes before clinching the upset in a titanic third set decider.

Stosur broke twice and was broken once on her way to taking the first set.

But the confidence from having the lead was soon drained by Navarro, the Spaniard breaking the Stosur serve at the beginning and the end of the second set to level the match.

Stosur was again behind early in the third set, but kept her hopes of advancing to the second round alive by breaking back in the seventh game,

The deciding set went back and forth on serve until Stosur finally relented under the never ending pressure flowing off Navarra's racquet in the 18th game.
