Steele through but Hing struggles
CALOUNDRA'S Eli Steele is busy preparing for his second round heat at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Peru.
Steele was impressive in winning his round one heat with a combined 13.93 points (out of a possible 20) in the under-16 division.
Wurtulla’s Kai Hing finished third in his round heat, meaning he has to surf in a sudden-death repercharge round for a chance to stay in the competition.
Hing scored 8.60 to finish behind Brazil’s Felipe Toledo (13.33) and Lucas Silveira (8.93).
Team Australia’s girls hit the water yesterday and Nikki Van Dijk was a standout in posting a convincing round one win.
As competition stepped up in the under-18 boys division, North Narrabeen’s Cooper Chapman shone for Australia, surfing twice and winning both his heats.
“In my round one heat, I was fortunate enough to lock in a good score at the start of the heat,” Chapman said.
The ASP yesterday announced it would host the Kangaroo Island Pro, a 6-Star ASP World Tour event, in South Australia from November 4-9.
