A SPECTACULAR show will light up the Fraser Coast sky in the next three days.

Australian astronomer Dave Reneke said the meteor shower known as the Perseids would begin on Saturday night and continue on Sunday and Monday.

"Meteors are typically best after midnight, but in 2013 with no moon to blot out the sky, you might want to watch in late evening as well," Mr Reneke said.

"As seen from around Australia's east coast, the waxing crescent moon will set an hour or two after sunset on any of those mornings, so moonlight shouldn't be so overwhelming as to ruin the show."

Mr Reneke said it was impossible to predict how many meteors would be visible but it could be 25-40 an hour.

"It'll be a beautiful early morning scene," he said.

"The Perseids are typically fast and bright meteors.

"They radiate from a point in the constellation Perseus the Hero."

But skywatchers will not need to know where Perseus is to watch the shower because the meteors will appear in all parts of the sky.

"The Perseids are considered by many people to be the year's best shower," Mr Reneke said

He said the Perseids tended to strengthen in number as late night deepened into midnight, and typically produced the most meteors in the hours before dawn.

The meteors are often bright and frequently leave persistent trails.
