Stars follow their dreams to Oz
DOZENS of children and two dogs showcased their skills yesterday in hopes of scoring a spot on the cast of the Empire Theatre's newest production, The Wizard of Oz.
The showcase marked the second weekend of cast auditions, including those for the character of Dorothy's devoted dog Toto.
Wizard of Oz director Alison Vallette kept a close eye on the two groups of children auditioning for the role of a Munchkin.
"We are looking for a child who has a good range of dancing skills, singing skills and acting skills," Ms Vallette said.
"We will probably choose about 20 Munchkins but will have two casts, so 40 children all together.
"The minimum age (to be a Munchkin) is 10 years and the maximum height is 150cms."
Children auditioning yesterday were taught a group song and dance routine to perform for selectors - Ding Dong the Witch is Dead.
Ms Vallette said The Wizard of Oz was the Empire Theatre's major production for next year.
The show opens on March 23.
Tickets for the show will be on sale on November 10 as part of the launch of the Empire Theatre's 2012 Subscription Series.
The cast will be announced in December.
