Stanthorpe youth take the stage

THE night was young and so were the performers front and centre at Park Beats at Weeroona Park on Friday night.

Around 80 people stopped by to enjoy the talents of Stanthorpe's youth as a part of the 2018 Queensland Youth Week celebrations.

Southern Downs Regional Council Community Development Officer for Youth Bronwyn Carnell said the debut Park Beats event was well received.

"Everybody who I've talked to who went said it was a really great night,” Ms Carnell said.

"They said they really enjoyed it and commented on how good all the local young performers were.

"It was a great vibe, people were relaxed, people were having fun.”

Ms Carnell said all of the Youth Week events came together in just a short amount of time.

"It was a lot of hard work by a lot of people,” she said.

"I was happy with the end result.”

One of those people who helped bring the event together was Andy Wilmott from Soular Music.

He said he was happy to see the young people taking the stage.

"I really enoyed the fact that we had a few young local performers who got a chance to perform in public for nearly the first time,” he said.

"I was pretty happy with the audience turn out, the end result turned out quite good.

I was talking to a couple of the performers and they thought it was pretty comparable to previous Youth Week concerts.”

He said events like these were important for young musicians in the area.

"I can't make the point strong enough that there isn't really enough opportunities available for the youth to be able to get up and perform live,” Mr Wilmott said.

"We certianly need to encourage more rock music events.

"There are a lot of talented young people sitting in their rooms playing guitars and not getting out there.

"We need to be able give them concerts to play at and give them dates.”

Mr Wilmott said he definitely wanted to host a similar event at next year's Youth Week and even hopes to have concerts like this more frequently throughout the year.
