THEIR day jobs include managing a car wash and running a school but by night, Mikado cast members Michael Connolly and Kathleen Watt are performers.

A community musical always brings people from all walks of life to the stage and Gladstone's production of The Mikado is no different.

Mr Connolly plays a Japanese gentleman in the musical, the theatrical form being a new experience.

"It is my first musical," he said.

"It is the opportunity to explore my artistic self because I manage the Goondoon St car wash full time during the day. Musicals are the other part of my life."

Mr Connolly said he enjoyed the journey the musical was taking him on, even though it was a stretch at times.

"I am surprised how involved it really is and how much fun it is," he said.

"I am juggling family, work and other commitments. Let's just say the washing isn't getting folded as much."

Mrs Watt, a Japanese schoolgirl in Mikado, has been a fan of the arts her whole life.

She is also the acting principal at St Francis Catholic Primary School.

The Mikado has given Mrs Watt more than just the opportunity to have fun.

"The show is my release. I am in my happy place and it re-energises me," she said.

"I am doing it for my students at school, to show them it's okay to be in the arts. You get confidence from it."

Mrs Watt and Mr Connolly encourage everyone to see The Mikado which runs from March 20-28.
