Speech had no facts

IT'S getting close to election time so that means another heavyweight politician has dropped in to visit us.

This time it was current LNP parliamentary leader, Jeff Seeney, riding into town as we warm up to go to the polls for the Queensland elections.

Mr Seeney addressed a joint meeting of the Hervey Bay and Maryborough chambers of commerce yesterday morning and while many in the meeting were eager to hear his views on the Fraser Coast, they would have left wondering if he knew anything at all about the district and its needs.

Mr Seeney told the 100 or so representatives of local businesses that he had a great relationship with local LNP representative, Ted Sorensen, and praised him as a hard working local member

But when asked just what issues Mr Sorensen had put before him, he glided away from the question with a perfect Wally Lewis swerve.

“This is a fact-finding mission for us to find out what the infrastructure needs are for the Fraser Coast,” he said.

There was no mention of the Fraser Coast getting extra police (Mr Sorensen's pet project), there was no mention of flood proofing the Maryborough Hervey Bay Road, in fact there was no mention of any specific project.

Mr Seeney also played down the notion that we would lose out on election funding promises because Hervey Bay was classed as one of the safest seats in the state for the LNP.

“It's not about safe seats, it's about having a creditable state member who can put forward a strong creditable argument to get things done,” he said.

On one issue he did speak out about, Mr Seeney warned that the all-powerful Department of Environment Resources and Management may get their wings clipped if the LNP assumes power.

He said that some in DERM ran their own agendas and didn't conform with the wishes of the parliament and the people. That, he assured those at the Boat Club breakfast, will change if the LNP gets the nod.

On that note he did win some votes.
