Special Olympics athletes honoured by club
THE Caloundra Mallet Sports Club is giving back to two athletes who have their sights firmly set on achieving big things at the 2018 Special Olympics.
The club will host a family fundraising day on Sunday to raise money for Anthony Boyd and Damien Hallam who will compete in the sailing at the games to be staged in Adelaide in April.
Anthony's mum, Maureen Boyd said she couldn't be prouder of her son who continues to achieve goals in his chosen sport.
"Anthony started when Sailability set themselves up in Mooloolaba in 1995,” she said.
"He was just a boy then still going to school.
"I remember getting a note home one day to tell me to come down because my son would be sailing by himself.
"It brought tears to my eyes to see the independence it gave him.”
Caloundra Mallet Sports Club president Susan Bertram said supporting Boyd and Hallam in their endeavours was an easy choice to make.
"Anthony's aunty has been a member here for probably two years now,” she said.
"She's become a member who has been very supportive of the club so when this came up we were more than willing to support her nephew and his friend.”
"It's a very worthy cause.”
Ms Bertram said the fundraiser will have something for everyone, including many games and croquet.
"There will be games like closest to the bullseye and other fun games focussed on mini-golf type situations,” she said.
The fundraiser is set to start at 10am at the club on Arthur St, Caloundra. For more information contact Kathy on 0488964150.
