Special $70,000 reward for two Bobs
WALLOON-based Bob Dempsey felt a bit like a celebrity after sharing in $70,000 prizemoney for winning Ipswich's nationally recognised auction series.
Long-time trainer Bob and his wife Sherril were back at work at their Fido's Lodge Boarding Kennels and Cattery just hours after Saturday night's celebration at the Ipswich Showgrounds.
The Ipswich couple were jubilant after outsider Pyro Bob capitalised on some early trouble in the $100,000 Group 2 final to streak up the inside and win.
Pyro Bob, paying $12.40 the win, beat home Slick ($1.30) and Ivergarry Lady ($1.50) in the time honoured Rosewood Community Bank-sponsored final over 520m.
It was Bob's biggest success at the Ipswich track, providing a memorable party after he had 2004 greyhound of the year Pure Torque.
"All me mates and that were there,'' he said, reflecting on his latest racing highlight.
"I was happy when my dog won. The bloke that was in there last night he was only a pup really.''
From his previous 31 starts, Pyro Bob had won $17,514 in prizemoney for connections. Six of his previous seven wins had been at Albion Park.
That tally was dramatically enhanced after Saturday night's successful dash around the Showgrounds circuit.
Bob wasn't surprised to see his final contender feature after the dog had earlier run well behind the Tony Brett-trained Lantana Lass, which launched from box eight on Saturday night.
"That fella of mine nearly picked up that dog in the heats,'' Bob said.
"At the second time, he (Brett) thought he (Pyro Bob) was going to get me.
"I said 'yeah, I thought he was going to get you too mate'. He was just in behind him and he let fly.''
The first turn on the Ipswich sand surface again had a major bearing on the outcome.
"All the real good dogs were on the outside,'' Bob said, suspecting what might happen.
"I said if the real good fellas jam up, look out (for Pyro Bob).''
When the trouble occurred, Pyro Bob slipped up the inside and dashed home. "He likes the rail,'' Bob said.
Having won so well over 520m in Brisbane and Ipswich, Bob said longer distance races were next on the list.
"Once it gets a bit cooler now, he'll run over the 600,'' Bob said.
"And that's when he's really, really going to go because his run home time is great.''
Bob was working at his Karrabin kennels today when happy to have a quick chat.
But after moving up from Victoria 28 years ago, he's enjoyed being in the greyhound industry.
"I've always had dogs and at one stage of the game I had a fair few,'' he said.
He keeps his greyhounds separate at the 21 acre Fido's Lodge, which provides a comfortable country location for pets.
"A lot of me dogs, I don't really gallop them all the time. I walk them,'' he said.
Sherril was happy to see Bob receive a racing reward.
"He's been in them a long time and he puts a really lot of work into them,'' she said.
"He loves them so it's nice to see him get rewarded after all this time with them.''
Ipswich's next major meeting is the annual City of Ipswich Gold Cup series in October.
