Souths and Proserpine maintain their lead at the top

SOUTHS' big three showed why the defending premiers will be hard to beat for another title in this season's Auscoal Super Cup at Tiger Park yesterday.

Halves Grant Rovelli and Luke Vaccaneo and hooker Matt Temby were dominant as the Sharks maintained joint leadership of the competition with Proserpine with a 44-12 defeat of Wests.

"They were very good, they took ownership of the team and the game plan and they executed it very well," coach David Simpson said.

"You've got the experience of Grant and Matt, plus the enthusiasm of Luke at five-eighth, but it all comes down to the forwards laying a platform and controlling the rucks."

Vaccaneo backed up strong work by the forwards to score two tries as Souths jumped to an early lead from which the Tigers never recovered.

Lock Adam Wright was a standout in the forwards.

"He's a very aggressive man in his general nature and he has strong carries on the field and shows plenty of venom in defence," Simpson said.

While Wests coach Mick Baker was disappointed, he said the side had plenty to work with to ensure a top-five finish.

"Luke Young was very good for us and Grant Moore gave us plenty in the middle," Baker said.

"We're disappointed as a team in the way we performed but we'll move on and concentrate on our next game against Sarina in two weeks."

Proserpine kept pace with Souths at the top of the table with a tight 12-10 win over Sarina.

Leading 10-6 with 10 minutes to go, Sarina had a player sin-binned before Proserpine scored and converted for the win.

Teams have a bye next weekend.
