Southgate targeting home success as England manager

FOOTBALL: Gareth Southgate is seeking redemption for his own European Championship heartbreak after being handed the role of England manager.

The 46-year-old former defender has been given a four-year contract, 20 years after his missed penalty in the Euro '96 semi-final against Germany cost his team victory.

Wembley will host the 2020 European Championship semi-final and final and after the disappointment of this year's tournament in France, Southgate is targeting success on home soil after being chosen to replace Sam Allardyce.

"That's clearly in the back of everybody's mind,” Southgate said of the chance of European glory.

"Having played in the last European Championship here in 1996 and got so close as a player, I have a desire to address that record.

"That's something that I think is a realistic aim for the team given the age and the way they'll mature in the next few years in particular.”
