Rocky softballers test their skills on representative stage

ROCKHAMPTON softballers have hit a home run with eight members putting their hand up for selection in state or Australian teams to contest various tournaments.

Fifteen-year-old Tia Waters was the youngest player to be picked for the Australian Schoolgirls team, currently competing at the International Friendship Series, at Blacktown International Sportspark in Sydney.

Pitching for the national side, Waters and the Australian Schoolgirls made a successful start, posting two wins from two games on Monday.

They had a 9-0 victory over New South Wales Country before defeating regional side Waverly 8-0.

They will be tested in their next game against the New Zealand Schoolgirls however.

Two other Rockhampton Softball Association members were also in action at Blacktown - Daniel Giles and Jakobie Massey.

The pair were picked to play for Queensland at the five-day tournament, and made a solid start with an 11-0 win over NSW Metro before going down 6-0 to one of the competition heavyweights, the Australia Navy team.

Queensland have their work cut out for them, with match-ups against national and state sides looming.

International development, national, state and regional development teams were all involved in the series, which provided a high-level, robust and competitive carnival for the players, aged under-19.

While the Rockhampton trio were busy in the field this week, five more Rockhampton players were preparing to travel to Lismore to compete at the Under-15 Regional Championships.

Courtney Stubbins, Chanae Reed, Ashley Roberts, Tom Rutherford and Jeromy Waters, along with Gladstone's Michael Ludkin will suit up for their state to contest the event starting on July 9 and finishing July 13.

Rockhampton hosted the previous two championships, which was rain affected.

This year, Queensland is hopeful of a rain-free tournament, and an improved performance having finished in the middle of the bunch in recent years.

Rockhampton District Softball Association's Glen Giles said having nine members selected for representative duties was a coup. "RDSA is extremely proud of their achievements and it is a just reward for the hard work and effort of the players and coaches," Giles said.
