'SATURDAY Night Live' honoured the late David Bowie this weekend.

Former cast member Fred Armisen returned to the programme and gave a speech about how his life had changed because of the iconic singer - who died of cancer last weekend - and recalled how the 'Cracked Actor' hitmaker had "transformed" live television when he appeared on the legendary show.

Fred said: "When I was in high school and living in Long Island, I stayed up to see David Bowie play on 'Saturday Night Live' and watching him was, for me, a life-changing experience.

"He had these backup singers that were like choir singers from the future and a toy poodle with a TV monitor in his mouth."

"David Bowie, whatever space he was in, whatever medium he was using, and that night for me, he transformed live television."

The 49-year-old actor then introduced a clip of Bowie performing 'The Man Who Sold the World' from inside an oversized statue on the show in 1979, alongside costumed backing singers and a live band.

All three of Bowie's performances from that appearance on 'SNL' are currently available to watch on NBC.com.
