Skipping team hits the Downs

A GROUP of talented young skippers dazzled local school kids yesterday as part of a three-day skipping tour of the Downs.

The eight girls from the Sherwood Arrows of Sherwood State School in Brisbane, along with their coach and school teacher David Hass, performed at the Scots PGC college yesterday morning.

The performance was one of nine the girls are doing as part of their role as ambassadors for the Heart Foundation.

Teacher David Hass said the Arrows were the longest serving Jump Rope for Heart skipping team in Australia.

"This year is the 30th anniversary of the Sherwood Arrows, making them the longest serving demo skipping team in the country," he said.

Mr Hass said the idea of the tour was to convey the message of a healthy heart and a healthy lifestyle to school kids on the Downs.

"We are used as motivators for schools to get active and also as a reward to schools who have worked hard in the Jump Rope for Heart program," he said.

"The impact we have is the response we get- from resounding applause to shocked silence."

The girls, who range from grades three to seven, have been skipping for two to four years and know 34 tricks collectively between them.

Mr Hass said the girls trained hard at both school and home. "The girls practice for an hour and a half on Monday afternoons, 45 minutes on Thursday mornings and are also expected to practice at home," he said.

The Arrows also performed at Glennie Heights State School, St Mary's Primary and Warwick Central State School before heading to schools in Toowoomba.
