Size of sinkhole near Clermont remains a mystery

A SINKHOLE has been found near Clermont, but neither Isaac Regional Council nor the Department of Natural Resources could say how big it is.

The council issued a "sinkhole advisory" on its website on Friday, stating quite precisely the sinkhole occurred at "Lot 201 on CLM643, south of Clermont".

"The sinkhole has been cordoned off by council and the relevant State Government agency - the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy - has been notified.

"It is located on State land about 300m past Rural Number 99 on the western side of McDonald Flat Road, approximately 30m from the roadside."

The council added the area is "popular with prospectors and trail riders", and urged people to steer clear.

When phoned the organisations could not provide any measurements or photographs of the sinkhole in question.

A spokesman for the department suggested it would likely have more information come Monday.

However, the council has advised anyone looking for more information to phone the department on 13 74 68.
