Six little piggies hog limelight
SIX little piggies hammed it up and hogged the limelight when they took to a miniature racetrack at the Peak Pig Races and Music Muster on Saturday.
The muster was a hotbed of country music talent, featuring performances from Rob Black and The Kelly Gang, Luella, Shane Conroy, JJ Hancock and Boonah's own singing sensation, 15-year-old Becc Hordoff.
But six pint-sized piglets dressed in sequinned racing silks stole the show when they went head to head in an obstacle course-style race.
The pigs, bred and trained by Noah's Thoroughbred Racing Pigs under the watchful eye of owner Kevin Kiley, proved a hit as they vaulted over jumps and tackled hay bales and tunnels.
Pig wrangler Shaunena Duffy revealed the secret to motivating the piglets to race.
"They love milk and they'll do almost anything to get to it," Ms Duffy said.
"We train them to race for it and they have to figure out the obstacles to get to the milk at the end of the track."
Ms Duffy said the pigs were from a mix of breeds to produce a diverse field, and would race for as long as they fitted into their custom-made silks.
"They're great to watch. It's always surprising to see who wins, and people love to have a flutter on them."
Event organiser Neil Duddy said the annual races and muster were an important community event.
"Everyone loves cheering on the little pigs as they race through the obstacle course to the finish line," Mr Duddy said.
"We also had some of south-east Queensland's best country music artists deliver great shows throughout the day and night."
He said rain throughout the afternoon and evening had put a dampener on the event, but dedicated revellers stuck it out and enjoyed the event in its entirety.
"We probably had about 350 through the gate and we were aiming for 1000. It was very promising early on but the rain was disappointing.
"Those who did stick around had a great time and I'm sure everyone will be back next year."
The event is in its fifth year and is a major fundraiser for the Queensland Royal Flying Doctor Service.
