Sippel hits 9000, helps Bluedogs stay unbeaten
MILESTONE man Michael Sippel produced an all-round performance to help keep Laidley Districts undefeated in the Harding-Madsen Shield at the weekend.
Laidley defeated University by 107 runs in a bonus point victory on Saturday.
Sippel needed 85 runs to eclipse the 9000 run career mark. His 91 not out ensured he left Toowoomba's Heritage Oval with 9000 and change on his way to five-digit figures.
He also added two wickets from six overs to be the clear man of the match.
Whether or not he reaches the vaunted 10,000 mark remains to be seen, but for now Sippel is just happy to be in good batting form.
"I wasn't aware of it before the match, but someone told me afterwards. It's nice to tick off a little milestone like that,” Sippel said.
"The next step I suppose is to hit 10,000 now. You never know, I get injured easily now so I'm just taking it game by game at the moment.
"While I'm still enjoying playing cricket and still scoring runs, I have no plans to retire.
"We'll just get through this season first and see how things go.”
Sippel leads the Harding-Madsen Shield competition in scoring (384 runs) and average (128) through seven innings.
He has also shown great longevity at the crease, recording four not-outs in a season where no other batsman in the top 50 has more than two.
The win over University was an expected one for the Laidley juggernaut, but an important one as they look to the semi-finals on December 10.
"That win secures us a spot in the semis, which is what we wanted,” Sippel said.
"We played well (on Saturday). They probably had the better conditions to bat on, but we wanted to go through the whole season playing good cricket and we've continued to do that.
"The batsmen are doing well, and the bowlers are coming out and doing what they have to. Everyone is contributing.”
With their finals berth secured, Sippel said the club would keep their foot on the gas for the final regular season fixture against struggling Highfields this weekend.
"It's a big day for us, it'll be Jason Cubit's 200th game for the club so we don't want to play poorly and regret it,” he said.
