Singing isn't alien to X-Files star David Duchovny

WHO knew David Duchovny could sing?

The X-Files star proves you're never too old or musically-challenged to have a crack at rock stardom, announcing an Australian tour of theatres next February.

He joins a long line of actors who have attempted and mostly failed to match their success behind the camera on the concert stage.

There have been cringe-worthy attempts at solo records by Don Johnson, Bruce Willis and Corey Feldman and bands from Russell Crowe and Keanu Reeves. You thought you'd forgotten 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts and Dogstar?

A plethora of actors just keep on giving us records despite a lack of interest - Scarlett Johansson, David Hasselhoff, Lindsay Lohan, William Shatner and Juliette Lewis.

And then there are those thespians who can actually sing and pull off playing pop star from Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) and Steve Martin (a banjo god) to Jack Black (Tenacious D) and Hailee Steinfeld.

Duchovny released his debut record Hell Or Highwater in 2015 and played a handful of gigs to launch it in the US.

During breaks in his filming schedules for the Twin Peaks reboot and other television series, he booked a tour with his band through Europe last year and kicked off an American run of dates last February.

The 56-year-old actor only started learning guitar in the wake of his split to Madam Secretary star Tea Leoni, to fill in the hours when their children weren't staying with him.

While he knows his way around a television studio, Duchovny described the first day of recording Hell and Highwater in the studio as "horrible” to Rolling Stone.

"At one point, I was just lying on the ground underneath the mic, yelling that this was all a mistake,” he said.

The Californication actor continues to practise guitar daily and have vocal coaching and recently admitted "while I'll probably never be a good singer, I can sing”.

Duchovny and his X-Files partner Gillian Anderson will reunite in the coming months to film an 11th season of 10 episodes due to air later this year or early 2018.

No doubt there will be plenty of fans of his small screen work to check him out on the theatre tour which will feature mostly songs from his debut album and its follow-up which is due out later this year.

For the fanboys and girls, there is a $280 VIP meet and greet package available.

General tickets are on sale from 9am today.

Duchovny performs at Eatons Hill Hotel, Brisbane, on March 1 next year.
