Shrek The Musical set to take over Empire Theatre

SHREK is coming to Toowoomba.

The giant green ogre will visit the Empire Theatre in October as part of the Toowoomba Philharmonic Society's production of Shrek The Musical.

Set designer Kacey Weber, who is an interior designer by trade, said pre-production for the musical was well under way, with some sets already under construction.

"We're going as big as we possibly can," Ms Weber said.

"It's such a well-known movie, it's such a great Broadway show, it's a magical fairytale, but we are bringing a little bit of darkness and reality to it.

"There will be a lot of movement and exciting things brought to life."

Ms Weber said they took some inspiration from the Broadway show.

"We watched the Broadway show to see what they did and we somewhat stayed true to that," she said.

"But the Broadway show is very cartoony, we wanted to contrast that a bit.

"All the sets in the Broadway production are very similar, we wanted to have distinct zones that are completely different... more nitty-gritty.

"It's still very early days, but I'm excited to think of all that will happen."

Shrek The Musical will be on at the Empire Theatre from October 12 to 14.

The production team is searching for cast members. Auditions will be held from May 5.
