She's got a wise head on young shoulders

WE are all aware of the phrase: "a wise head on young shoulders" and when it comes to the transport industry there are few younger or wiser than SRV Road Freight's Compliance and Fleet Officer, Angela Bawden.

Angela came into the industry as a 19-year-old a little over two years ago, starting with the Ormeau, Queensland-based company as a Compliance Assistant and working her way up, thriving on each challenge.

Her drive and dedication earned Angela this year's NatRoad Youth Employee Award for people 30 years and younger working in any part of the road transport industry.

The win gives recognition to her desire to go above and beyond in work practices and ethics, demonstrated by her dedication and passion for the industry in her current role as the company's Compliance and Fleet Officer.

"It's a very involved job," she said.

"Basically I sort the legal requirements for licencing compliance for our drivers, do driver and vehicle audits and check new vehicle compliance and accreditation.

"It requires a lot of attention to detail."

In a fleet boasting 85 prime movers and double that number of trailers, that means a lot of time taken sorting detail and managing paperwork.

Since starting with SRV Road Freight in 2016, Angela has become involved with developing and implementing a plan to combat driver fatigue with a program based around amending timeslots.

"That came about after one of our drivers had a rollover last year. I started investigating circadian rhythms and interrupted sleep patterns to see their effect and to see if changing shift times would have a benefit."

Circadian rhythms, essentially the "body clock", lower energy at night - between 2am and 4am - making us tired and unable to concentrate.

Angela also finds time to stay abreast of safe driving practices, keeping up-to-date with current Heavy Vehicle National Law, Chain of Responsibility, Load Restraint, WorkCover and on-road incident and accident procedures.

She also carries-out drug testing for job applicants, if requested by management or customers or after any work-related incidents.

Angela is also keen on developing increased driver satisfaction and safety compliance at SRV Road Freight and is actively works towards that.

"I talk to the drivers to ensure they are happy. If there are any issues I try to make improvements."

If all of that isn't enough, she is close to completing her final semester at Griffith University's Gold Coast campus, where she is studying for a double degree in Bachelor of Business and International Tourism, majoring in Event Management.

Angela also recently completed a Supply Chain Management course.

And she and her partner of four years are building a house.

So where does Angela Bawden see herself five years from now?

"I could see myself as the Compliance and Fleet Manager at SRV Road Freight or maybe even on the NatRoad Board."
