Shakespeare dream out under the stars

IT may be late into spring, but the Midsummer fairies will be working their magic and mischief at Bungawarra Wines later this month.

Stanthorpe Little Theatre presents its 14th season of Shakespeare under the stars with one of his most beloved plays A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Written in the late 1500s, A Midsummer Night's Dream, is widely performed throughout the world and holds themes of love and relationships that are still relevant today.

"Most of the play is set in a forest full of woodland spirits,” play director Christopher Desgrand said.

"It's a frolicking tale, with the world of humans intersecting with the realm of magic. As the story goes, the lovely Hermia is to wed Demetrius but her heart belongs to the poetic Lysander. Hermia's friend, Helena, is in love with Demetrius. The lovers Hermia and Lysander seek refuge in the forest. In search of his runaway bride, Demetrius goes into the forest. Helena chases after him. The feuding fairy royalty, Queen Titania and King Oberon, seize the opportunity to toy with each other and the various visitors. With the help of their fairies, they control and manipulate the four lovers, as well a group of amateur actors (rehearsing a play in the forest), all with hilarious results.

"This is one of Shakespeare's bawdiest plays, full of clever innuendo.

"We always strive to present the Bard's language in a way that our audience understands the plot with its subtleties and humour.

"Time and time again we get feedback from those who didn't think they liked Shakespeare until they saw a live production.

"If you've never been to Shakespeare Under the Stars, please join us in the forest and we'll do our best to delight you.”
