Seven sues Australian Federal Police over Corby raids
THE Seven Network has followed through on its threat to sue the Australian Federal Police over armed raids on its Sydney offices last week.
Parent company Seven West Media today lodged court documents in the Federal Court's Sydney registry, ninemsm has reported.
It was reported the network had offered up to $3 million to convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby, 36, in exchange for a tell-all interview about her time in Kerobokan Jail, Bali.
Last week 34 AFP agents raided the network's offices with a warrant under proceeds of crime laws.Speaking at a Senate hearing this week, AFP Assistant Commissioner Michael Phelan defended the raids, saying time was of the essence.
Channel Seven was not breaking any law by making the deal but the AFP wanted to seize the proceeds before they headed overseas under the laws that forbid people from profiting from their crimes, he explained.
"Over a quarter of a million dollars went offshore and was lost to the jurisdiction," he said.
A hearing date is yet to be set in the Federal Court.
