Seven grants of $5000 lift Bellingen and Dorrigo projects

BELLINGEN Shire Council is investing in seven community projects to be funded from the Environmental Levy Community Fund.

Each project receives $5000 after meeting criteria and proving the ability to reach environmental or sustainability priorities.

The grant means community members can build a composting toilet to disabled access standard at Northbank Community Garden.

Bellingen Shire Youth Services is working with Urunga Mens' Shed to mentor disadvantaged young people in the refurbishment of bicycles recovered from Raleigh Waste Hub.

Bush regeneration will be undertaken at Capararo and Broken Bridge Reserves by the Never Never Catchment Group.

A Bellingen Bee Sanctuary environmental education project will be run by Northbank Community Garden.

MYRiver Bellinger, a school-based science project run by OzGreen, will develop an action plan to sustain the health of the river.

Bielsdown River Rehabilitation Project run by G and A Cork Memorial Trust, will engage Dorrigo Aboriginal Green Team and students from Dorrigo High School in water quality monitoring workshops.

Finally, the Centre for Ecological Learning, Eco Learning and Living Project will run workshops on various topics of ecological sustainability.

Mayor Mark Troy said the variety of projects show the depth of Bellingen's culture of common community vision.

"It's fantastic to see such innovative projects being undertaken within our community," he said.

"Council looks forward to hearing about progress on these projects and the positive contributions to improving our environment which develop out of them."
